How do you want to live?

At the beginning of 1789, during a time of pressing social and economic crises, Cahiers de Doléances were distributed among the French population on the orders of Louis XVI. The latter used the complaint booklets to address proposals for future coexistence to the Estates-General and the king. Both had the power, but not the will, to bring about the desired changes. The consequence was the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789.

The restrictions on everyday life caused by Corona will probably soon be behind us. What will then come to the fore again are the problems of Western democracies that have not been overcome: economic crises, migration movements, disintegrating social ties, the crisis of representation, steep power and wealth imbalances, global system competition, digitalization getting out of hand, climate change, and so on.

Theater an der Ruhr invites you to a journey into your possible future.

Based on the Cahiers de Doléances, we would like to ask you which political, social, economic and ecological conditions you would change if you had the power. Or put in more visionary terms: How do you want to live? There are no limits to your imagination.

Based on your ideas of a successful coexistence, a project consisting of two formats will be created in the coming season:

How do you want to live? - Discussion forum

Wie willst du leben?

A project by Simone Thoma and Markus Schlappig

How do you want to live? - Play

On the basis of the encounters at the forums and the contents negotiated there, a theater production is to be created that gives these, artistically translated, sensual force.

To enter into conversation with you, we ask you to tell us: How do you want to live?
