What are the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence? AI is a hot topic of our time. The computing power of computers has increased to such an extent that AI is being applied in almost all areas of society. But how can actions of advanced AI systems still be tracked and controlled when they work and decide on their own? We want to find answers to this question with Ute Schmid and her research project Explainable AI. Ute Schmid is Professor of Applied Computer Science and Cognitive Systems at the University of Bamberg. She teaches and researches in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and cognitive modeling. One of her focus areas is interpretable and human-like (human-level) machine learning. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, she leads the Explainable AI project group, and on top of that, she was appointed to the Bavarian AI Council. In 2020, she was awarded the Rainer Markgraf Prize for her achievements in knowledge transfer between university, research and educational work.
