König Ubu # Am Königsweg

Alfred Jarry, Elfriede Jelinek

The second production by Philipp Preuss at Theater an der Ruhr relates Jelinek's text "Am Königsweg," which deals with the political rise and presumed fall of Donald Trump, to Alfred Jarry's legendary "Anschlag auf das klassische Theater": König Ubu.

Preuss, who already ironically confronted the media age in his last work at Theater an der Ruhr ("Leonce und Lena"), consistently continues down this path in his new play, calling for a media literacy that would be invaluable in confronting one's own filter bubbles.

"I try to stick to the truth when I can't help it, but how can you stick to something that is constantly fluctuating? How are you supposed to stick to something you can't find because you don't even know it, how are you supposed to know where the truth is if you've never seen it? How can you recognize it? Am I supposed to look for it? I really have better things to do!

Everything is true that is said, that is, everything is true, and everything is false, what more do we need seers?"

Philipp Preuss has worked at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, Theater Dortmund, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Schaubühne Berlin, Schauspiel Leipzig, Residenztheater Munich, among others. Since 2001 Preuss has been staging exhibitions with fictional-virtual artist figures portrayed by actors; he extends the concept of theater into the realm of the visual arts.
