Castle Heldenplatz 3D
or The Great Irritation
Virtual-Reality-Experience
KGI - Office for Non-Communicable Affairs.
1988. Vienna. Claus Peymann stages Thomas Bernhard's play Heldenplatz at the Burgtheater and triggers a "theatre scandal" at the time. Austrian society reacts irritably to individual passages of the text that have been leaked in advance: "6.5 million debiles", "more Nazis than in 1938", "Austria as a mindless and cultureless cesspit". The whole of Austria is outraged across all political camps and classes and intoxicates itself with the scandal. Calls for boycotts, death threats, demonstrations, applause.
After intensive research, interviews and conversations, KGI produces a rousing virtual reality experience in which the audience finds itself as the protagonist in the frenzy of the Heldenplatz scandal and thus embarks on a search for traces and causes of the great irritation of the present. Documentary material meets Thomas Bernhard granteleia. Our protagonist also embarks on the dangerous venture of remembering and threatens to lose herself in it, to go berserk as well, in which she initially encounters the madness of our time without a care in the world.
She encounters ghosts of the past, contemporary witnesses with Jewish ancestors, Thomas Bernhard, Claus Peymann, Kurt Waldheim and confronts the question: What do we have to lose when we dare to look into the abyss, the unspeakable of the German and Austrian past?
