Aufbruch im Iran

Short film programme with films by Iranian female directors

Around 1400 IRANIAN DIRECTORS are active worldwide in the fields of animation, documentary, experimental and feature films. "The desire for expression, the fight against oppression and the need to convey a message are the reasons for this growth. But why are male filmmakers still more present?" So asks Ghasideh Golmakani, filmmaker and curator. Together with Amin Farzanefar, she has put together a short film program that traces and addresses these issues. We are showing this program as part of our series Awakening in Iran, which began at the start of the year. The screenings will be followed by a discussion between Ghasideh Golmakani and Amin Farzanefar.

Ghasideh Golmakani (*in Tehran)
comes from a family of artists and journalists. At the age of 18, she went to Paris to study art history and cultural studies at the Sorbonne. After returning to Iran, she began making films. Her book about Ali Abbassi, an important pre-revolutionary film producer, was published in 2019; Golmakani also works internationally as a film curator. In her films, she mainly deals with taboos in traditional Iran - topics such as child abuse, harassment in public spaces and everyday violence against women in general.

"Even if you try to forget your gender and do your job, society violently reminds you of it in everyday life. I try to remind society of the destructive effects of this violence against women."

Amin Farzanefar (*1965 in Cologne) works as a cultural journalist, curator and lecturer, preferably on Middle Eastern cinema and the cinema of migration. He is co-founder of several film festivals and film series, including "Tüpisch Türkisch", "Mobile Urban Cinema" and the "Refugee's Cinema Project".
