Utopie
Season 2025/26: UTOPIE
Theatre as a space of possibility
In the midst of ecological, political and social crises, our idea of the future as an open, mouldable horizon of expectation has recently become noticeably darker. The time that lies ahead of us increasingly appears to be a threat rather than a space for creation.
Against this backdrop, we are placing utopia at the centre of our artistic work in the 2025/26 season - as an attitude, as a search movement, as an invitation. For us, utopia does not mean designing perfect worlds, but courageously thinking and experiencing alternatives in the here and now. In playing together. In a shared experience. In the encounters that theatre can create again and again.
At the Theater an der Ruhr, we understand utopia not as a theme, but as a practice. Instead of a distant vision, there is a concrete attempt not simply to surrender to the present, but to counter it with a different idea. Our projects aim to establish temporary communities, create aesthetic spaces of experience and facilitate a form of dialogue in which new perspectives can emerge - between the stage, the audience and urban society.

This season, we invite you to enter this utopian space with us - with all its tensions, its doubt, its power. We want to make theatre a place of dialogue, experience and encouragement. As an attempt to try out new perspectives together. As an artistic assertion that what is does not have to be everything.
For us, UTOPIE means: searching together. Designing together. Working together to realise that things can be different.
